G' W🌍RLD: Nigerian Air Force Aircraft Departs Abuja For Paris Amid Niger Political Crisis

A Nigerian Air Force aircraft departed Abuja on Sunday afternoon for Paris, France.  The Dassault Falcon 7X, with registration number 5N-FGU, departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at 4.18 pm due to a delay as its Scheduled Time of Departure (STD) was 3 pm. The reason for the delay could not be established at the time of filing this report. However, SaharaReporters learnt that the aircraft is expected to touch down at Paris-Le Bourget Airport by 10.42 pm.  The aircraft landed in Abuja at 6 pm from Gombe on Saturday and in the last six days, it has been to Lagos, Abuja Maiduguri, Kano and Gombe.  It is also not clear why the Nigerian Air Force aircraft departed for Paris or the identities of the people on board; however, SaharaReporters learnt that it could be connected to the political crisis in the Republic of Niger following the July 26 coup d'etat that ousted its democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum. G' W🌍RLD: Troops kill 23 terrorists, arrest 137 criminals

  The Defence Headquarters has said troops in various operations across the country killed no fewer than 23 terrorists and arrested 137 criminals. The arrested criminals consist of five kidnappers; 22 oil thieves; one informant among others. The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen Edward Buba, in a statement on Friday, said the operations were conducted between August 14 and 25. He also said 41 kidnapped citizens were rescued in the operations.  It    partly read, “The counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations being conducted by troops continue to produce results. G' W🌎RLD: Oil rig collapse in Delta state 1 person was confirm dead and 3 people missing

The oil company disclosed this on Tuesday, in a statement posted on its social media platforms. The company also said three of its crew members are still unaccounted for. “Seplat Energy regrets to announce a serious incident on the Depthwise swamp drilling rig, ‘Majestic’, early this morning. Seplat, the operator of the SEPLAT/NNPCL joint venture, contracted the rig,” the statement reads. “It was in transit to its planned drilling location at Ovhor in Delta state when it capsized.  At least 92 of the 96-member crew are accounted for and safe. However, tragically one fatality occurred during the incident, while three other rig personnel are still missing. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the crew member who sadly lost his life and the three crew members who are still missing at the time of this report.” Seplat also confirmed that their emergency response and rescue efforts are working alongside the rig owner and the authorities to find the missing persons.

  Over 23 personnel of the Nigerian army have been killed following an ambush on a military convoy by gunmen suspected to be terrorists in Niger State.  A military source said that the incident occurred on Monday morning around 5am.  The incident occurred between Zangiwa and Kangara in the state.  According to the source, an army major and two lieutenants with one identified as Y. Alkali were among the victims.  “Nigerian army this morning lost about 23 soldiers, they were ambushed by bandits. One major, two lieutenants were among the victims. In fact, they set some of them ablaze inside the Hilux vehicle,” a soldier told SaharaReporters. Meanwhile, efforts to reach Onyema Nwachukwu, army spokesperson, for comment were unsuccessful as he didn’t respond to his messages sent to  him.

  According to the country’s president, Jose Maria Neves, “We all should work to restore constitutional order in Niger but in no way through a military intervention or an armed conflict at this point. We should actively engage in talks and resolve issues diplomatically because any military intervention will make the situation worse, turning the region into an explosive zone," Agence France-Presse quoted him as saying. Meanwhile, a meeting of defence chiefs of ECOWAS member nations scheduled to hold in Accra,Ghana, yesterday, Saturday, August 12, to concretize the planned troops deployment for military intervention in Niger Republic, was unexpectedly called off. Reason being that member nations are divided on the need for such an intervention at this time.  Cape Verde joins the ranks of Sierra Leone, Ghana, Liberia and Togo who earlier on declined to take position on the proposed military intervention in Niger.   There are strong indications that the pump price of petrol may be on the verge of another increase—the third increase in 10 weeks—as information gathered from oil marketers suggests that the increase may be much sooner than later. This prediction is backed up by new information about the surge in the landing cost of petrol. Which has gone up by 37.4 percent month-on-month to N632.17 per litre in July 2023, up from N460 per litre in June 2023. This cost doesn’t even include other additional expenses like transportation and taxes, which could push the final price to nearly N700 per litre. Some marketers who spoke to Financial Vanguard are predicting that the landing cost for August will rise further due to worsening factors, including foreign exchange scarcity and deteriorating exchange rates. Zaria Central Mosque collapsed on Friday, killing four worshippers and injuring five others. The Emir of Zazau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, who confirmed the incident, said the victims were observing the Asr prayer around 4 pm when the incident occurred. According to him, “We had earlier observed a crack on the wall of the mosque yesterday and were planning to deploy a team of civil engineers to effect repairs when this unfortunate incident happened. The emir condoled the deceased’s families, just as he directed that people should pray outside the mosque pending the repairs. The Kaduna Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mohammed Jalige, did not pick up his phone or respond to a text message sent to him.
