Obi’ll soon be declared Nigeria’s president, Abure tells Nigerians in US

Julius Abure, national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), says Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the party, will be declared president of Nigeria by the tribunal. Abure spoke while addressing some Nigerians in the United States during a tour of the country. Obi who came third in the presidential election held in February and his party are challenging the outcome of the poll.   They are asking the court to nullify the victory of Bola Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC. Abure, who is on a tour to the United Kingdom and the US, said the judgment by the presidential election petition tribunal, PEPT, is expected to come on or before September 16. “Following Peter Obi’s participation in the 2023 general election, we changed the political narratives in Nigeria. We gave them a run for their money,” he said. “They have murdered sleep and they will sleep no more. They have stolen what is not for them and they will not sleep until we recover it all.”

  Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has ordered the immediate payment of gratuities and leave grants for workers in the state as palliatives to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy. Spokesperson to the governor, Ekerete Udoh, also said that Eno has actually approved the payment of N1billion as gratuities to primary school teachers in the state. Udoh while speaking to newsmen in his office on Tuesday further confirmed that the Akwa Ibom governor has also given his approval for the immediate release of N800 million as leave grants for local government (LG) workers. He said that Eno did not stop there as the governor ordered the immediate release of N600 million part payment as gratuities for the Akwa Ibom state civil servants. The administration of President Bola Tinubu will likely spend about N341.23bn on settling judgment debts between 2023 and 2027, according to findings by The PUNCH. The judgment debts were listed as promissory notes in a document titled, ‘Schedule of Promissory Notes Issued by Category as at September 30, 2022’ by the Debt Management Office. According to Investopedia.com, a promissory note is a debt instrument that contains a written promise by one party (the note’s issuer or maker) to pay another party (the note’s payee) a definite sum of money, either on demand or at a specified future date. Section 4 of the Government Promissory Notes Act states that government promissory notes are paid from the general revenue and assets of the federation.   IN a bid to cushion the effects of subsidy removal in Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, yesterday, announced the provision of free shuttle buses for workers, students and payment of monthly allowances to specified households. Oyebanji, in a statement by the Commissioner for Finance, Akintunde Oyebode, also approved the payment of N5,000 as a conditional cash transfer to 10,000 households from August to December 2023, especially to the aged people. Other items on the palliatives list include payment of one month’s pension arrears for state and local government pensioners, and payment of one-month subvention arrears to tertiary Institutions, among others. The statement disclosed that the palliatives were recommendations of the committee, set up by the Governor to initiate interventions that will soften the impact of the subsidy removal.
